OMG, yum yum yum. With all the cake, spinkles, bubblegum, rootbeer, butterscotch, tears of a virgin nubian princess bullshit flavored vodkas and liqueurs on the market, it’s refreshing to see a new expression of a time honored classic. Drambuie, with it’s serendipitous creation story by rebel with a cause “Bonnie Prince Charles” and 250 year old history is not just for old men, and neither is Scotch Whisky as a category either.
Drambuie 15, a blend of 15 year old Scotch Whiskies as the base, has all the characteristics of a Speyside Scotch along with a blend of herbs, spices and heather honey. It’s drier than the original and much more elegant.
After you get through the sweetness of the nose, there’s wet moss, melted honeycomb wax and uber ripe pear; so robust, yet nuanced and sexy.
To taste, it’s very well balanced, slightly viscous, typical of most liqueurs, yet the Scotch is shining through, elevated and prominent, not covered up. I picked up hints of pepper, evergreen and wood with a touch of smoke. With a deep, rich and satiny rheology, Drambuie 15 is not heavy, cumbersome or mouth coating in the least, but rather, dries out slowly, leaving a wonderful spicy finish.
